In one of my interviews, I was asked if p-value for a variable should be close to 0 or close to 1 ?

In statistical significance testing, it is the probability of obtaining a test statistic at least as extreme as the one that was actually observed, assuming that the null hypothesis is true.
So, you must not have p-value near to 1 as it will mean your answer is more likely to be random.
